Dianthus Barbatus fl.pl.sp nanus - Double flowers. This is a very showy fragrant plant that is a native of Europe. It is a mound forming plant that is commonly grown as a perennial, but can be grown as a biennial or annual. It is a compact mound forming plant that begins with lance-shaped leaves with evergreen foliage, sprouting up slender stems holding a dome shaped cluster of doubled small flowers with outstanding color schemes. They are all two toned with contrasting colors of red and white, white with a pink eye, two toned pink and red with a pink eye. They are an ease to grow and care for, blooming from May to August and will self sow and come back the following year if not deadheaded. It is very happy in hot summer climates planted in rich humus soil that must be very well drained. These are a must have to cheer up garden borders or wherever you want to make a cute colorful statement. In the Victorian language of flowers, sweet william symbolizes gallantry.
