Helianthus Annuus – Chocolate is a great looking plant you’ll want to add to your garden if you are wanting something bold. These chocolate sunflowers have shades that vary within each petal from a deep red to a deep chocolate. If you pair this unique variety with a traditional yellow sunflower, it will create a wonderful contrast in your garden. These will bloom in the summer, grow between 4 – 5 feet tall, love full sun with well-drained soil, and are also drought tolerant. An interesting fact about sunflowers is that they were named for their habit of turning their faces towards the sun. They have an ancient history beginning with Native American tribes across North America. The seeds were used for oil, and the plant was also useful because it provided dye and medicinal ointment. Sunflowers were also widely used in gardens and for making cooking oil; then, the production of this heart-healthy oil became a major industry. These flowers will attract butterflies, bees, and birds to your garden while being resistant to deer and rabbits. They are great for cut flowers, in containers, beds, borders, and along fences. They are easy to grow and drought tolerant, which is always a good thing for the busy gardener. Sunflowers are also said to be the happiest of flowers and symbolize loyalty and constancy.
