Poppy - Papaver Somniferum - Black Swan. Also known as breadseed poppies and opium poppies. Papaver is the genus of “true” poppies and is perhaps the most growable. They are popular for their showy bowl or cup shaped flowers with frilly crepe paper textured petals of deep deep purple appearing black. They tend to be more sturdy self-seeders and produce larger seeds to sow further apart. A cool climate serves these plants well. They are not fond of summer heat. Excellent for cut flowers that will last well in water if the stems are seared. Cut when buds begin to open. The seeds are edible and used in breads and other confections, but don’t eat them raw or your stomach will be aching. They are a good choice for rock gardens and along the top of low walls. Also used in heirloom gardens.

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
