Poppy- Papaver Somniferum- Hens and Chicks, a unique poppy cherished for its seed pod that gives its defining appearance resembling a plump mama hen surrounded by numerous baby chicks at the base. Not only are the seed pods a distinguishing feature, but its paper-thin bloom is also a center point. From Mid-Summer to early Fall, a beautiful sight brings awe to the garden, a bright yellow eye at the center circled by deep purple impressions all contained in a large fine purple or pink blossom. Also, a standout poppy in the garden due to its wonderful lettuce-like foliage. These have often been grown in areas of vegetable gardens for pollination due to the high concentration of Bees it draws. These have been grown for centuries as symbols for sleep and death, as well as fertility, because of all the little chicks around mama hen.

Edible: The seeds can be used for cooking and baking or can be stored ready for next year. The seeds can be used in cooking but if eaten raw can cause mild stomach upset.
 
I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike!  There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
